Summer Reading list: part 2

On the 4th of July John and I went to a movie and then walked over to the book store, where we got lost for 2 hours and came away with four new books! We are addicted to books. So I thought I would update my summer reading list (previously listed here).

Wishful Drinking - by Carrie Fisher
I saw this book and thought that the cover looked pretty funny - Princess Leia with a martin glass, passed out. I picked it up and started looking through it. It was short, with larger print and it had some pretty funny pictures in it, and it is shot enough to read in a day. As I read a few of the pages I realized that is really was funny, and Carrie Fisher seems to do a pretty good job laughing at herself. John has already started reading it and has been laughing though it already. He keeps reading part of it to me and I have to remind him to not read to much of it to me! We are heading down to the Grand Canyon later this week and I bet we will have it finished before we get back.

The Road to Woodstock - by Michael Lang
John and I are sort of Woodstock junkies. We both wish we could have been there. It was nice to find a kindred spirit in John, as I have always been addicted to this music festival. When we heard they were releasing a 40 year anniversary box set of the film we could not wait and bout it as soon as it came out (the letter box version they show on tv always gets cut off on our screen). I was bummed that we had to wait an extra month to get this book! I am happy that we finally have it and I can't wait to read it - hopefully before our Woodstock's 40th birthday party we are having next month! We will see. I have so much to read, I need to get a move on it!

Well-Preserved: Recipes and Techniques for Putting Up Small Batches of Seasonal Foods - by Eugenia Bone
I saw this book on a local news segment a few weeks ago and thought that it looked fun to try to can! I remember my mom use to can some when we were little kids and I am always looking for a way to try and save some money, so I thought I would give it a try. The author is local also. The book has a really nice description on how to get started canning and the different methods. Unfortunately not all of the recipes in the book are ones that appeal to us (a little fancy/ food snobby almost), so I am not to thrilled to try all of them. But it gave one of the better descriptions on how to can that I saw so I thought I would give it a try. I will post updates once I get the chance to try!

Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving - by Judi Kingry & Lauren Devine
This is another canning book I found in the book store. Only this book has over 400 pages of recipes! And get this - it has four(!) recipes for ketchup! FOUR! Wow! I can't wait to try them! I have been wanting to try to make my own ketchup for a while. I know HFC's are bad for you and ketchup has so much! I figure if I can make my own without them maybe it will help me to loose some weight with out having to give up one of the things I love most (food wise). There are many other good looking recipes in the book, along with a good section on canning methods, and Ball is one of the old-school canning companies, so I figure they know what they are talking about.

So that is what I bought. Hopefully I will be able to read all of these book before Christmas!
