Saturday Drive

Today John and I went out and enjoyed the nice weather (it decided to stop raining and being windy for one day at least!). I have been wanting to see more of Colorado. Tourist come from all over the place to see the state and I still have not seen much of it myself! We pulled out the map and found a road sort of near by to go explore.

We decided to head south to Delta from Grand Junction (C, on the map above), then east toward the mountains. I know people who have not visited Grand Junction think I have views of the mountains here, but I can not see any of them. There are plenty of plateaus and mesa's that are beautiful and if you drive east or west a few miles you can see mountains off in the distance (if it is a clear day), but all of the mountains are at least a hour to two hours away.

It was a beautiful drive and we took a side trip over to Marble (B, on the map above), following the beautiful Crystal River. We took a drive up to an actual marble quarry, four miles above the town. There were beautiful views up there and some great flowers and even some wildlife (a Pika and a curious/hungry chipmunk). We hoped we could go look at the quarry, but it was closed to the public. Still, it was nice to get off the beaten path and get up in the mountains!

We drove home though Carbondale and Glenwood Springs, where we hoped to eat dinner but did to see anything that looked good. We have a favorite Indian restaurant there we like to eat at, but I remembered that the last time we were eating there was the same day and hour that my friend Matt was killed by a drunk driver in Tulsa. I was not ready to go back in there yet, since it reminds me of that now, and how I wish I had know what was going to happen so I could have called him and warned him!

We continued on and stopped in Rifle to have dinner before driving back home into the sunset (hard on the eyes by the way). It was a great day and it was nice to get out on the road just to enjoy the day together and not go anywhere particular.

You know, if you ever need a little getaway, Frisco is the place to go! That's where I stayed to and from my trip to Utah last month. It's just on I-70. It's got gorgeous mountains, a lake and marina, hiking trails, dinosaur tracks in the flagstones at the marina, plus an outlet mall nearby and a great restaurant in the downtown area called The Boatyard.

Cool! Thanks! I have driven by it who knows how many times on the interstate and have never stopped there other than to get gas. We will have to check it out sometime. I didn't know there were dino tracks there.
